Raised Beds
Garden plot use next to the school building was cancelled for the summer of 2015 so that concrete work could be done around the building. Another garden bed option was offered to learning communities next to the "community garden". Roughly half the teachers chose to focus on alternative stewardship projects rather than plant beds with food crops. The other half of the learning communities did plant garden beds. These are being harvested for farm to school projects over the Fall.
Notes:
The concrete work around the building was postponed until the Summer of 2016. This fact means that the smaller raised beds will again be necessary for food growing opportunities.
One big challenge to success we have experienced is finding members of each learning community to take on responsibility for watering and weeding plots and raised beds during the Summer. The plants in the beds would not have survived without occasional watering and weeding by the Farm to School Coordinator.
